This is Hefei's First "Colorful Intersection"
Recently, the intersection of Innovation Avenue and Yunfei Road in Hefei underwent a refined traffic renovation and became the city’s first "colorful intersection." This intersection, featuring red, yellow, blue, and white colors, is not just for aesthetic purposes; it represents an innovative initiative by Hefei's public security traffic management departments to improve road safety and efficiency.
According to reports, the renovation was a result of extensive research by Hefei’s traffic police, who tailored the design after evaluating the actual traffic conditions, traffic volume, and management needs of the intersection. A series of measures were implemented with the goal of clearly defining the rights of pedestrians, non-motorized vehicles, and motor vehicles, thereby effectively regulating the traffic flow.
At the site, one of the most noticeable changes is the addition of a three-color guiding area. By moving the stop line forward and marking waiting and guiding zones with yellow, green, and blue colors, the design clearly delineates the paths for different vehicles and reduces the pedestrian crossing distance. This has improved the flow of traffic, transforming what was previously a "congested and chaotic" red-light situation into a more "orderly and smooth" experience.
To address the risk of collisions between right-turning motor vehicles and non-motorized vehicles, a row of red-and-white flexible collision-resistant posts has been installed in the right-turn danger zone. These posts form a visually clear "safety island," reminding vehicles to slow down while physically separating the two types of traffic. This ensures better visibility for both drivers, helping to prevent accidents. These posts are also reflective at night, further enhancing their warning effect.
Additionally, special left-turn lanes and ground arrows have been painted for bicycles and electric vehicles, creating a kind of "route map" on the ground to guide non-motorized vehicles in making smooth left turns, separating them from motor vehicles. The new traffic signals for non-motorized vehicles clearly display a bicycle icon, emphasizing the safety and road rights of cyclists.
Regarding the improvements, Zhao Yue, team leader of the Hefei Public Security Traffic Management Brigade’s High-tech District Unit, commented: "This renovation is very intuitive. It is now clear where pedestrians, non-motorized vehicles, and motor vehicles should stop and go. With clearer delineation of traffic rights, everyone can move in their respective lanes, significantly reducing accidents at the intersection."
This innovative intersection aims to not only enhance safety but also improve overall traffic flow efficiency, making it a noteworthy example of modern urban traffic management in Hefei.
