5.6 Earthquake Strikes Gansu

 A magnitude 5.6 earthquake jolted Longxi County in Dingxi City, Gansu Province, at 5:49 a.m. today, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The tremor originated at a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was monitored at 34.91 degrees north latitude and 104.58 degrees east longitude.

The epicenter is approximately 12 kilometers from Zhang County, 12 kilometers from Longxi County, 35 kilometers from Wushan County, 42 kilometers from Weiyuan County, and 69 kilometers from Tongwei County. It is about 78 kilometers from downtown Dingxi City and 145 kilometers from Lanzhou, the provincial capital.

Historical data from the CENC shows that within a 200-kilometer radius of the epicenter, 30 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3 or higher have occurred in the past five years. The largest was a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that struck Jishishan County in Linxia Prefecture, Gansu, on December 18, 2023, located approximately 185 kilometers from the current epicenter.
