11-Day Autumn Vacation for Schools in this City

In recent days, many posts on social media claimed that primary and secondary schools in Nanjing may implement their first autumn holiday from September 28 to 30 this year, creating an 11-day super-long National Day break.

On September 15, a staff member from the Department of Basic Education of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education confirmed that a related document does exist and was drafted by the provincial Development and Reform Commission. However, the education department has not yet finalized or issued an implementation plan. The official added that a decision and notice could be released within this week. As for whether the policy will take effect this year or next year, the public should follow the official announcements on the department’s website.

The Nanjing Municipal Education Bureau also said on the same day that it has not received any official notice yet and that any follow-up arrangements will be based on instructions from the provincial education department.

According to information published on the Jiangsu Provincial Government’s official website, in May 2025, the provincial government issued the document “Several Measures for Implementing Special Actions to Boost Consumption.” In Article 21, under the section “Improving the Consumption Environment,” the policy encourages qualified localities to try setting up a spring holiday for schools in the three working days before May Day and an autumn holiday for schools in the three working days before National Day.

Public reaction has been mixed.

Some netizens welcomed the idea, saying children work hard at school and could use extra rest. However, they suggested that it would be better if the autumn break were scheduled later instead of merging with National Day, since otherwise there would be no other long breaks afterwards.

Others opposed the plan, noting that if the autumn holiday is combined with National Day, it may cause problems when parents’ work schedules do not align, leaving children unsupervised. Critics also warned that an 11-day break could disrupt learning progress and make it harder for students to readjust to school afterwards.
